Overview
The rapid exploitation of natural resources and escalating waste generation by human
activities have profoundly altered ecosystems, raising urgent concerns about
biodiversity loss and the long-term habitability of our planet. Environmental
observatories are vital tools in this context, meticulously documenting the state and
evolution of socio-ecological systems by capturing the complex interplay of matter,
energy, and biota across interconnected environmental compartments. However, these
observatories face significant challenges, including remote locations, limited access to
reliable energy, and frequent maintenance needs, all while striving to minimize their
environmental footprint. Our comprehensive survey of observatory networks in France
(OZCAR and Réseau Zone Atelier) and Germany (TERENO) highlights a critical need for
continuous, adaptive monitoring systems that can respond to real-time environmental
events, especially as onsite technical staff resources decline. This website presents
key findings from our survey, showcasing the potential of integrating Fog Computing
technologies to process data closer to sensors, thereby enhancing system reactivity,
robustness, and energy efficiency. For a deeper dive into the complete survey results
and the transformative role of Fog Computing in environmental monitoring, please refer
